Toyota Yaris Ranking

Because I am definitely not having a Moment about the Yaris I have decided to create a personal ranking from best to worst yaris model. This is just my personal opinion based on my own biases.

For the sake of simplicity, I won't rate the facelifts separately and instead only rank the entire model generation.

1 Yaris P1 1999-2006

The OG. The cuddle bug that graced the world and said "I WILL get you from A to B no matter what you do to me". Change its oil and it's happy.

2 GR Yaris 2020-

The cool little brother. The GR set out to fulfil the question we all wanted to be answered, "What if Yaris but fast as fuck".

Makes the old TR and RS variants sweat, and even people who previously scuffed at the Yaris do a double take.

Kind of looks like it has this dentist push-your-lips-away device on. Angry hamster.

3 Yaris XP9 2005-2011

As a reviewer put it, the second gen is an example of "sophisticated blandness". It's a car. It drives you places. The interior features are good enough for people who just want to have a car.

It takes all of this with a friendly face. Its circular body refined with a few chosen body lines to break up the shape make for a car that got a participation trophy at a sports event.

It's just happy to be included.

4 Yaris XP21 2020-

Final evolution (for the time being). Lost some of the no-thoughts-head-empty charm of the older Yari. Manta ray inspired front is somewhat unique in today's angry faced car world. Wants to look like the GR, but not that much.

5 Yaris Verso/FunCargo XP10 1999-2005

What SUVs could have been. Toyota themselves called this an MPV- Multi-Purpose-Vehicle. This micro-van can bring your kid to school and then work on a construction site on the same day.

Get yourself a Yaris that can do it all. Looks like a stretched P1. What it basically is.

6 Yaris Sedan/Vios/Belta XP90 2007-2013

Looks neat. A hatchback-limousine based on the original Yaris, and spiritual successor of the Toyota Echo.

Same charm as the XP9. Looks just happy to be of service. That's a lot of names for one car though. Like the Echo, it's not available in Europe :(

Other generations of the Yaris Belta drop the Yaris part, being sold as "just" Toyota Vios/Belta which is why they're not on this list.

7 Yaris XP13 2010-2020

The awkward middle evolution. The XP21 also has a wild design, but this is just... no. I don't like this. All I see is Steve Harvey's block of a moustache but car.

At least the back looks neat.

Why the fuck make a small car an SUV. Kill it with fire. Throw it in a ditch. IDK just make it leave. This is an insult to the original Yaris. I want to buy a ticket to Japan and murder whoever is responsible for this piece of shit.

The Yaris Verso was right there. Why not modernise that and release it. Don't tell me the reason I know why they did this I don't like it though.

Honourable Mention: Daihatsu Charade 2011-2013

Hail Mary by Toyota's struggling daughter in the European market. They called this Charade because it's literally just the XP9F pretending that it's not.

I learned about Kei Trucks today.

They can be found for sale in the us if they're over 25 years old (bc us laws)

They are so cute.

Honestly would be a great affordable way to have a truck.

Articles even say they're less carbon footprint.

The ones I see listed online don't have a lot of mileage on them- we're talking less than 40k here.

Some of these 90's ✨gems✨ and earlier don't come with AC or radio. Lmao.

Aka. they're literally meant to be farm/work trucks.

They seat like two people unless you can get hands on a van version. The better option imo.

They're imported so older models may have the driver's side on the right.

The manuals have more typical 4-5 gears (that automatics only have 3!).

The Honda Acty is the only one that is not 4wd... typical lol

Rear-wheel drive and 4wd options are Subaru sambar, Daihatsu hijet (later rebadged as a Toyota), Mazda scrum, and Suzuki carry.

They can need a lot of maintenance (because of age to rubber parts) and new parts take time or cost to arrive.

Lots of caution driving them on modern roads.

Looks like they require premium gas, which is the norm in the countries they're imported from.

The Kei trucks you can buy legally in the US.

VIN (Vehicle Data Card) Established in 1954, American automobile manufacturers use a vehicle identification number, or VIN, to describe and identify motor vehicles. Beginning with the 1981 model year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the USA required that all over-the-road-vehicles sold must contain a 17-character VIN. This standard established a fixed VIN format. Often found on the steering head portion of the frame, the VIN encodes the vehicle's year, make, model, body and engine style and unique serial number. Each motorcycle Owner and Service Manual lists the location of the VIN and engine number. In the early nineties, Suzuki instituted a frame program where street model replacement frames would receive an identification label which used a portion of the original VIN number. So if you have a late model Suzuki street motorcycle, even if it has received a replacement frame, it will have a VIN number or identification label on the steering head portion of the frame. The VIN is a record of manufacture and can tell us in the first three digits the country of origin, the manufacturer and the vehicle type. For example: J (Japan) Y (Yamaha) and A (motorcycle). The next four or five digits denote the manufacturer’s model and series code for a particular machine i.e., SC282 (pre 1995 Honda Fireblade) or GM51A (Suzuki GS500E).

Some manufacturers use an eighth digit to identify the model series or engine. The ninth digit is a check digit and allows the manufacturer or authorities to see if the VIN is genuine or not (it would be unwise to give examples). The tenth digit denotes the year of manufacture. The N between the X and the 2 tells the bike is a 1992-year's model.

There’s three days to go as I’m writing this blog article and its safe to say I’m starting to feel a little nervous. I decided to sell two of my SUV’s, no reserve, on two different auction sites, at the same time. Why you may ask? Well for one I have too many vehicles, seven to be exact. But mostly because I have financial goals. Owning seven cars as a single male with no kids isn’t quite pragmatic. Especially when you’re trying to purchase a condo in downtown San Diego that only comes with one parking spot. I chose two of the top auction sites on the internet. Bring a Trailer which has been a popular place for car enthusiasts to buy and sell collector cars. Cars and Bids has only been around for less than a year and already has closed some impressive auction results. So here we are, three days to go and my 4Runner on BaT has a $800 lead on my Montero on C&B.

Although both vehicles are 3rd Generation models of their kind, that’s pretty much all they have in common. The 2001 Toyota 4Runner is 2WD, the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero is 4WD with a center locking and limited slip differential. The 4Runner fits five passengers, the Montero fits seven. The 4Runner has 193K miles on the odometer, the Montero has 139K. The 4Runner has cloth seats you manually adjust, the Montero has power seats, leather, sunroof and a premium sound system. On paper its obvious that the Montero with all its features will fetch more money than its counterpart. But what the Montero boasts on paper doesn’t necessarily translate to value. I predict the 4Runner will sell for a lot more than the Montero. A lot more than $800 that’s for sure. And even though comments on the site for the 4Runner have mostly been about it lacking 4x4 capability. The 4Runner has something that the Montero doesn’t. Brand recognition. All 4Runners are known for their reliability and durability. Especially the 3rd Gen 4Runner, manufactured between 1996-2002. You will see more 3rd gen 4runners on the road than any General Motors product built between 2003-2010. Now that’s just an educated guess but I am confident enough to make that presumption knowing how terrible most GM cars were in the 2000’s. Most car enthusiasts know Toyota’s in general are reliable vehicles. There’s no question about it, their reputation is well known around the world. Mitsubishi may have a good reputation in parts of the world, perhaps in countries where they continued manufacturing reliable cars. However in the United States, Mitsubishi has been falling down a slippery slope of failed Japanese imports such as Suzuki, Daihatsu and Isuzu. As mentioned in my last article, the Montero left the US in 2006. And even though they were always known for being reliable and durable like the 4Runner. The Montero has been gone long enough, that an entire generation of enthusiasts have grown up and forgot about it. The Montero lost its luster and was never able to maintain a stronghold in the U.S. While the Montero was conquering rugged terrain in Southeast Asia the last 15 years, people in the U.S were buying 4runners and Land Cruisers.

As an owner of both vehicles, I believe my Montero is worth way more than my 4Runner. There’s no question about it, even if they both shared the same miles. The Montero boasts a fully capable 4WD system that can go up against the best off road vehicles manufactured today. We’ll see in three days if my prediction is correct. Until then I’ll nervously watch my two auctions go toe to toe with one another. At the end of the day one Japanese SUV will be victorious.

The results are in. And I was wrong.

The 2WD 4runner did not surpass the 4WD Montero. My Cars & Bids auction for the Montero ended at $5,700, three hundred dollars more than the $5,400 final bid for the 4runner on Bring a Trailer. However there’s a big asterisk next to that $5,700 figure. The winning bidder flaked. And the second to next bidder (@ $5,400) wasn’t interested anymore. So what happens next? Well according to Cars & Bids I had two options. I can either ask the third to next bidder if they’re still interested at $4,850 or take 50% of the winning bidders buyers fee as compensation. I wasn’t selling my Montero for under 5 grand, so I accepted the latter and posted my Montero for sale locally.

And after a month or so of dealing with flaky Californians, I sold it, for $5,500. One hundred dollars more than the 4runner (which sold very smoothly). So again, I was wrong. The Montero sold for more than the 4runner. And even though it was only for a measly $100, it still proved me wrong. And in hindsight maybe I should’ve sold the 4runner locally as well. Very few people on Bring a Trailer were excited to see a “2runner” as they called it on the website. Some even went as far as to say that I must have been a relative of the website’s owner for them to allow a 2WD 4runner on the site. Nevertheless, I still believe a local Californian would’ve paid more than $5,400 for such a clean 3rd gen 4runner. I could’ve probably waited it out and got more, but time is money and I can’t deal with flaky people. At the end of the day I’m glad the Montero sold for more. It shows that the market on all 4WD capable Japanese SUV’s are on the rise. And followers of Cars & Bids were excited to see a Montero featured on the site. I am sad to see it go, and down the road I’ll probably regret selling it for just $5,500. As for the 4runner, even though I am bummed that it sold for less than I expected. I still have another one, and it’s 4WD so those trolls on Bring a Trailer can’t say anything. And this one I’m going to keep for a little bit. I mean, money comes and goes, but collector cars that make you feel a certain way. They don’t come around so often.

Review: The Suzuki Swift Sport Is a Delightfully Odd Tiny Hot Hatch

Small, sporty hatchbacks are a rarity nowadays—but that’s not to say they don’t exist.

As a small, sporty hatchback, the Suzuki Swift Sport is an oddball anomaly. Gone are the days of cheap and cheerful, fun-to-drive cars, their slots in automakers' lineups having been taken over by SUVs. Demand for small cars has dwindled globally (perhaps because there are fewer of them), but this Suzukirefuses to let that get it down.

Available in Japan, Australia, and Europe, among other markets, the third-generation Swift Sport is one of the last extra-small and fun hatchbacks in production today. There's not much competition from the Japanese companies, as Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi, or even Daihatsu don't offer a small performance hatch. Nissan sits at the table with the Note NISMO S, and Volkswagen, too, with its Up! GTI. But that's pretty much it.

What It Is: The Swift Sport is smaller than a VW Golf but it's not so small to be considered a kei car by Japanese standards. That said, being roughly the same size as a Toyota Yaris, there isn't a ton of space inside. You'll get four adults in the Swift, although taller people might struggle with rear legroom, while the cargo area can accommodate four soft bags. At ¥1,870,000 (around $17,000) new—our test car cost ¥2,250,000 ($20,530) with options—the Swift Sport is an astoundingly affordable performance package, and the list of standard and available equipment includes a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams, which for a car in this price range is quite generous. (In some markets, the Swift Sport is sold as a well-equipped monospec model.)

Powertrain: Don't expect big numbers from this little car. The 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder packs 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque, but that's enough to punt it from zero to 60 mph in something like eight seconds, according to Suzuki, although we're sure that's a bit conservative. Of course, it won't strain your neck muscles with accelerative might, but it achieves freeway speeds easily and rewards momentum driving. The Swift Sport is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, although why anyone would go for the latter is beyond us. The manual isn't the most polished gearbox in the world, but it does the job well enough and rowing gears while you cane something this size feels entirely appropriate.

How It Drives: Weighing in at only 2,200 pounds or so, the Swift Sport feels light on its feet and is fun in a refreshingly simple way. There are few fancy gadgets or gizmos to take away from the driver's involvement with the car, there's no pretentious fake exhaust noise emitted by the audio system, and it's pure old-school fun. Throw the Swift Sport into a corner and you feel the front wheels dive in with an urgency you don't get in many heavier hot hatches, and its cornering attitude is playful and friendly—this car won't bite you whether you're attacking a twisty mountain road or . Should you work it beyond its limits, though, it'll let you know with a hint of easily recovered understeer. This is a car that works with you as a driver. The feelsome and communicative steering is surprisingly heavy given that most Japanese cars tend to have ultralight steering to ease urban driving; we were just fine with the weight but might have preferred a smaller-diameter steering wheel. That's what the aftermarket is for, we suppose.

Would It Work in the U.S.?: If we pretend Suzuki is still selling cars here, the Swift Sport would certainly appeal to a niche market looking for cheap fun. It would make a great first car for anyone with a remote interest in driving, or a nice runabout for city dwellers. It's a highly appealing package that's affordable to buy and run.

Verdict: While it's easy to dismiss cars that lack big, headline-grabbing numbers, stuff like the Swift Sport should be celebrated. They're a gateway to enthusiasm and passion, introducing drivers to a way of life that might eventually lead to, say, a VW GTI or BMW M3. Also, just look at it.
